Dick Dale invented surf music in the 1950's. Not the '60's as is commonly believed. He was given the title "King of the Surf Guitar" by his fellow surfers with whom he surfed with from sun-up to sun-down.

When Dale met the guitar and amplifier guru Leo Fender, he asked Dale to play his new creation, the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar. The minute Dale picked up the guitar, Leo broke into uncontrolled laughter with disbelief; he was watching Dale play a right-handed guitar upside down and backwards, Dale was playing a right-handed guitar left-handed and changing the chords in his head, then transposing the chords to his hands creating a never before heard sound.

TRACKING: Exit 380 at Pleasantry Lane Studios

Not sure if you've seen the curious post by Hand Drawn Records touting their upcoming compilation project, but the criteria lined out for getting onto the comp basically said, "New material. Cool material. Only."

Since we just released a record in December, the new material bucket initially seemed daunting.

I say initially because right around the submission deadline Aaron Borden hit the band with a demo titled "A Song About Us"; and it was righteous. Aaron and I did some multi-tracking on the tune, and as the HDR deadline continued to creep up we decided to give it a run for the disc.

Besides a quick two song Cities excursion with Alex Gerst in late-2009, the band has been tracking everything by our lonesome, and my, oh my, it was getting lonely. So, in a feat of email-ery we asked producer extraordinaire Salim Nourallah (Producer of the Year 2004-2010; Old 97's, Deathray Davies) to let us come hang our hats on him, and wouldn't you know it, he had a rack for us at his aptly named Pleasantry Lane Studios in Dallas.

Yesterday we rolled into the studio and I was able to catch a couple of quick iPhone pics in-between takes; which you can see below. They're grainy, but don't worry; our great friends and photo contributors James Villa and Jen Winters were on-hand to shoot stills, as well as, a video to accompany the comp release!

The release date for the Hand Drawn Records - Compilation Volume 1 has been set for April 14th @ Lola's Saloon in Fort Worth. We'll have more hoopla for you on that as we get it!

"Raggedy Woods" Pencils by Blocker

When creating the Townies album art I did A LOT of concept sketches, but none of them would stick until this one hit me like a...thunderbolt, light bulb?

The original piece was a large close-up of the Raggedy Ann and Andy characters, but the guys (ahem, Borden...Kelly) said it was "too creepy".  My thought is that if you get weirded out by a drawing of Raggedy Ann and Andy, then you might need to revisit your creepy threshold.

Well, I gave in a bit, because I made them smaller and threw them into the forest, which lends more to the backwoods theme anyways.

This image has been pressed onto all 1000 copies of Townies, so if they "creep" you out, perhaps just leave it in the player with the repeat-button pushed?   Problem solved!

EXCLUSIVE: Limited Edition "Townies" Prints

Perhaps over the last few months you've seen bits of James Villa's photography for our new Townies album on your cpu screen, but believe us, the digital viewfinder will never replace the real-deal physical print, so Hand Drawn Records has inked up an extremely limited number of posters (sixteen total), solely to give away at the two album release shows next weekend!

The limited prints are large, and mighty fine, so we are excited to get them into your hands.

Since such a small quantity is available, old Lady Luck will determine the who-gets-what in the form of a free raffle at the gigs.  Of course, the band will sign them with the ink and marker; so there's that too.

In case you haven't seen the pics, here are a few of the cropped shots (don't worry we won't spill the milk into the bagful of cats by showing you the full meal deal).

What is the "Townies" Project?

Last summer Hand Drawn Records commisioned long-time Exit 380 photo and video contributor James Villa to shoot album art for the band's new full length album Townies.  The photographer spent the following months shooting vintage gas stations, dried up putting ranges, and drive-in movie theaters all over the backroads of Texas.

The sheer volume of quality shots returned to the label far exceeded the usage for the album panels, so alas, something small became something big.

Townies CD Release Shows:

FRI., DEC 9th @ LOLA'S SALOON (Fort Worth, TX) w/ Secret Ghost Champion and Igneous Grimm. All Ages. Show 10pm.

SAT., DEC 10th @ CLUB DADA (Dallas, TX) w/ Grant Jones, Eastwood and Secret Ghost Champion. 21+. Show 9pm.

LYRICS: In The Park | Townies

Townies is officially on pre-sale via- http://exit380.bandcamp.com, but there's 17 days to go until the full length releases, so we've still got a ton of lyrics to post and supercool-ness-sess bonuses that we haven't even told you about yet!

So, put on your reading specs and get "In The Park" memorized to retain your lip-synching "front-row-joe/joan" status.  Not a ton of lyrics, so it should be an easy one for the brain.

In the Park
Lyrics by Dustin Blocker (ASCAP)

I was the one who took you one, brash and bold. That was the way it used to go, when we was young.

Oh, it just seemed right beneath the moon chill in the park at night.

You were the one who spoke in tongues, wild with moans. That was the way it used to go, when we was young.

Oh, I cannot lie it was you all the time. The love I take in now…

What I told you in your ear it still draws near although that night is gone it’s like a mirror, drawing lines to the past in fleeting grasps. Take your Mother home till I get back.
Colors change, “Yes”, but not the smells, they ripple like the waves in that wishing well. They dry till it’s flushed and won’t pay out, with nickels in the bottom looking up.

Oh, it just seemed right beneath that moon chill, the love I take in, in the park at night.

LYRICS: Soul Burning Train | Townies

Back in April we were talking about our guitarist Aaron Borden's newest contribution to Townies "Soul Burning Train", and how much the band was loving his demos.

With the release dates in just over a month we're laying out the lyric sheets for some sneak-peeks; and if you want the REAL insider info ..."Soul Burning Train" will be our first single off the record, so start getting your ears tuned for it.

Soul Burning Train
Lyrics by Aaron Borden (ASCAP)

Hanging on for too long letting go made me fly, free to love, free to roam…again.
Years of a one-handed grip on a dream broke free, the day of lust is gone.

I woke from a dream and escaped this soul burning train.
A driver or a rider?
Either way it’s a coatless day in the rain.

Wrapped around the wheel threw me for a loop, too many times my broken pride bled my side.
Breaking my hand free of this rusted chain, save my soul, heal my wounds; help me find my love of life.

I woke from a dream and escaped this soul burning train.
A driver or a rider?
Either way it’s a coatless day in the rain.

LYRICS: Daddy Was a Freight Train | Townies

Here we go...Track 2 for "Townies" Daddy Was a Freight Train...quite the feather in poppa's trucker cap.

Pencils and Photography by Dustin Blocker

Daddy Was a Freight Train
Lyrics by Dustin Blocker (ASCAP)

Daddy he’s a coming for us all…Rumbling like a freight train down the hall.
His face is as filthy as his heart….Daddy he’s a coming for us all.

You run. You run. You run.

Is Ma’ gonna save us? No, not at all…she’s off with Uncle bristling in the barn.
Her back is as filthy as her heart…Daddy he’s a coming for us all.

You run. You run. You run.

Now I’ve turned the corner, I can’t get home. Though a fire’s rumbling, I can’t get warm.
I guess Daddy turned me into his Son when he came a rumbling down the hall.

You run. You run. You run.

LYRICS: Run for the Gold | Townies

So, we'll be posting the lyrics sheets for each Townies track one-by-one (and in order for those of you who want to pay close attention), the first one being...Run for the Gold.

Enjoy and even watch the video.

Run for the Gold
Lyrics by Aaron Borden (ASCAP)

Riding from the Land of Blood. Blinded by the greed and lust. Gonna reach Paloma, when morning comes. American River here I come.

Would you run, would you? Could you run, could you? Would you run for the gold?

Pony’s head is riding low. No more clay from his hooves to throw. Gonna send my fortune back to Rhome. California I called you home.

Would you run, would you? Could you run, could you? Would you run for the gold?

I might lose it all in this one chance, trading my life for this dance. The whiskey in my pouch is almost empty. Please, Oh Lord, bail me out, make my pony strong and stout. The Trail Boss says, “Just one day to go”!

Would you run, would you? Could you run, could you? Would you run for the gold?

And the New Drummer is…(insert drumroll here)

And the New Drummer is…(insert drumroll here)

Out of the loop? Longtime drummer Bobby Shoes left the band in July to pursue more Bobby-doms, leaving us with a large gap in the rhythm department (by exactly one half to be accurate), which slowed our Townies recording production slightly and got us sniffing about for a live counterpart too.

We sweat it out through several auditions, and as most things tend to do; the search came around full circle to enlist the help of one of our good friends Secret Ghost Champion drummer Jody McCauley.

Now, to be clear, Jody will not be a full-time member for Exit 380, as he will continue to hold that role for SGC. However, this will allow us to flesh out the highpoint of our recording careers by playing Townies live (yes, Townies is that cool).

One more thing…Jody is a Bone-A-Fide skin killer (that means he’s rather quite good at the drumming). So pack some stickum for your toupee and perhaps a swath of Velcro for your hat.

We’ll see you in December!

Album Release: "TOWNIES" December 9th & 10th

ALBUM RELEASE: “Townies” - Show Dates

Two and a half years, two drummers, and 32 demos later, Exit 380 is finally prepared to release its 5th full length record Townies. The album will get two hometown release shows on back-to-back evenings; Friday, Dec. 9th @ Lola’s Saloon (Fort Worth, TX) and Saturday, Dec. 10th @ Club Dada (Deep Ellum, TX).

The eleven song disc was tracked primarily at Borden’s home studio, where we cut our 2008 The Life and Death of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Stone concept album. Townies follows a similar vein of storytelling, but through a noir-backwoods funnel.

The release will be coming via- our new indie label home Hand Drawn Records, and they’ll be staging fan freebies, limited edition bonuses and more, so…Stay Tuned!

Townies: HERE'S THE DEAL

Townies Machismo
By Dustin Blocker

The late, and often great, Macho Man Randy Savage used to say, "Here's the deal...", then he would go on to tell you what the deal was; and of course, he always put a little umph in it. So, since we are all die-hard machismo fans, we thought we would keep you in the land of knowing-the-deal with some full-disclosure of our own.

Earlier posts describing Bobby Shoes departure from the band to pursue his individual Bobby-isms have led our guitarist Jeremy Hutch into the studio’s cave for a double-stamp of his Hutchdom onto our upcoming Townies record by laying drums and guitars (as well as some fancy mandolin work). This has created an undeniable paradigm shift in the way we track, as the whole of the music has been arranged and written while in the studio as individuals. All the while his older brother THE Hutch has continued to lay the fattest lead bass this side of the Tarrant County Line.

The award to “the guy who sits in front of the tracking monitor the longest while still tracking guitars and writing songs” goes to… Aaron Borden, who has been holding producer’s court in his Fort Worth studio, with exception to my minor textural contributions (see: keyboards, harmonicas, rhythm instruments) and vocals, which I track at my house in Dallas.

It should be wholly apparent why the process has dragged a bit long, but we are at the end of overdubs and early mixes, which means the mastering studio is close at hand. Then off to Chris Whitehead at Hand Drawn Records to promote, print, and hopefully launch into some low lying stratosphere?

Another currently happening is Borden taking a job for a few months in Kansas, where our former road manager Dallas Rob currently resides, and where he is undoubtedly giving Borden the old Mid-West Way.

Our great friend and longtime contributor James Villa (who is about to launch his own official website) has been shooting photos for the Townies project for the last few months all over the Texas plains, and this week I was able to finish the album art design proofs from those shots, compiling them into the slickest disc art we will have to date.

On the last of the To-Do List is grabbing a new drummer for the live version of this act, which will ramp up the show dates calendar in accordance with the Townies album release dates.

That will conclude the deal for now. Thanks for playing!

Bobby Shoes Leaving Exit 380 // FAREWELL SHOW

Over the last few months several changes have come to life; new management, signing to Hand Drawn Records, retaining KP as our full-time keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist, and wrapping on a 2-year recording process for the full-length Townies album.  Of course those are additions, and sadly, now there will be a subtraction.

After five phenomenal years of breaking kick drumheads for Exit 380, Bobby Shoes has decided to move along to pursue time away from performance.  He has been a huge catalyst for our creative growth as a group, and of course, we love the bastard. So, we're definitely sad to see him go.

BUT - Its a celebration he says, and for celebration's sake, Bob will be doing one last gig with us in Fort Worth at the end of July.

Don't hide your light under the bushel, come say "BYE BOBBY" in person.

P.S.
Heather Shoes we love you too.

SATURDAY, JULY 23RD: The Wild Rooster (3204 Camp Bowie Blvd, Fort Worth, TX) // Exit 380 and Secret Ghost Champion // Doors 9pm. 21+.

SIDENOTES:

If you're wondering how we've managed to record an new album without a drummer; it's because Jeremy Hutch has been pulling double-duty on guitar and drums.

Also, the band has been auditioning drummers and we're inches from an agreement on a winner...chicken dinner.  More of that later; for now, CELEBRATION.

MUSIC AWARDS RECAP: Jeremy and Dustin go to Fort Worth

MUSIC AWARDS RECAP: Jeremy and Dustin go to Fort Worth
By Dustin Blocker

The alarm clock was flickering “3PM”. I put on a Rock n' Roll plaid, fired up the 4 cylinder, and swung the Chevy through Bedford to pick up Jeremy Hutch and Misty on the way to catch the first bands for this year's Fort Worth Weekly Music Awards Festival.

As we pulled into Funkytown the read-out said 100 degrees, and although the stretch between the seven venues wasn’t much, the Texas heat made any walk regrettable, so staying at any one stage for an extended period seemed bright. First stop for the day; Poag Mahone’s for new artist nominee Igneous Grimm.

Grimm flashed experimental-psychedelic sludge riffs with crisp western swing beats and duel lead vocals. They were tight, introverted, and solid during jam portions. Definitely a great start to the afternoon, and then it got even better.

The second band on the bill was a no-show (later it was stated there was a miscommunication on the band’s cancellation), so before Jerm and I could head out to the next venue we were asked to do a quick fill-in set.

Being wholly unprepared to play; the guys from Grimm (whose keyboardist David Vaughn and drummer Ben Hance are also equal parts Secret Ghost Champion) were gracious enough to let Jeremy use their guitar and rig. And although Jeremy Hutch has been in Exit 380 for over three years, we had never played a set with just the two of us, so we slapped together a few songs to which we were both slightly familiar and made it through the list fairly unscathed.

After the set we scrambled some gear out the door, and were out on our heels to catch as many acts for the 6 o’clock hour as physically possible. By this time our good friend, and go-to photographer, James Villa had joined us along with his family, and we took the short walk together to Lola’s Saloon for the much buzzed about American/Roots Rock nominee Whiskey Folk Ramblers.

Greeted at the door by the ever jovial Brian Forella; Lola’s (which is easily my favorite Fort Worth venue), was as expected…PACKED.  A sweaty and vibrant Whiskey Folk Ramblers was killing it w/ multi-instrumentalists on accordion, banjo, and horns laying down some tight swamp Americana. We stayed for about 3 songs, and then it was across the street to the Pour House for a band I had heard a lot about, but had yet to see live; Quaker City Night Hawks.

Being another nominee under the American/Roots Rock umbrella QCNH gave a hard charging upbeat squelch to that moniker, and I especially dug vocalist David Matsler’s high register delivery. Admittedly, it was a bit hard to focus on the act with the 3000+ televisions on the walls of the Pour House tuned to Sportscenter, and we had one more band to catch before the 6pm slots were wrapped, The Orbans, so up the street we did go.

The Orbans have had an explosion of buzz lately and we saw them at The Capital Bar for last year’s FW Weekly Fest. They were back on the same outdoor stage, this time sans-drummer. The lack of a rhythm section (albeit they had bass and keys) didn’t detract from The Orbans’ sound whatsoever, as their three-part harmonies and meticulous strumming on the mandolin and acoustic guitar filled up the void without pretense.

Next to that stage was the completely badass Calhoun, but we were pressed for time, so we had to hoof it back across to Poag Mahone’s where our HDR label mates Secret Ghost Champion were kicking off the 7 o’clock hour.

SGC were already into their second song by the time we rolled back into the pub, and the crowd had swelled significantly in our absence. Nearly a year since seeing SGC live, these guys have apparently been working on their live chops, as they were beyond tight. Their tracks on record are extremely well done, but they really brought it up several notches on the live take. Thumbs up homies.

After the SGC set we stepped outside and nearly got ran over by a couple of women in a pickup truck trying to hop a 2 foot curb...so that was fun. Then we threw out a few more high-fives intermingled with some hip-hop hugs before heading to the house and/or crib.

Definitely a good time in ol’ Fort Worth, and the FW Weekly staff deserves some big thanks in continuing to help cultivate such a diverse local music community. Indeed a great day for the fans and artists alike.

Till next year!

SIDENOTE:

Anthony Mariani snagged us a couple of copies of this year's FW Weekly Compilation Disc recorded specifically for the Music Awards by the nominees, and the CD is AWESOME. Not sure if they will continue to sell copies, but if so, check out http://fwweekly.com/ for details.
