Dick Dale invented surf music in the 1950's. Not the '60's as is commonly believed. He was given the title "King of the Surf Guitar" by his fellow surfers with whom he surfed with from sun-up to sun-down.

When Dale met the guitar and amplifier guru Leo Fender, he asked Dale to play his new creation, the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar. The minute Dale picked up the guitar, Leo broke into uncontrolled laughter with disbelief; he was watching Dale play a right-handed guitar upside down and backwards, Dale was playing a right-handed guitar left-handed and changing the chords in his head, then transposing the chords to his hands creating a never before heard sound.

Q&A: Saint Patrick's Day MADNESS in Fort Worth!

If you're like us, then you're ready for the grey Winter clouds and sniffled weather to blow out, so you can get Spring started up.

In preparation for those sun-soaked days, we asked ourselves a few questions...then we answered them.  Perhaps you have the same answers?

When is the First Day of Spring?
Saint Patrick's Day.

Where would you celebrate Saint Patrick's Day?
In the parking lot of an Irish Pub, surrounded by green revelers and food trucks.

How would you celebrate it?
With live music...and with high-fives.

Do you like free parties?
Yep.

What we're saying is; the Fort Worth Weekly has you covered with this year's Saint Patrick's Day MADNESS.  A FREE Two-Day Party featuring 11 local acts on a killer outdoor stage erected in the Poag Mahone's parking lot, smack in the heart of the 7th Street Arts District!

TRACKING: Exit 380 at Pleasantry Lane Studios

Not sure if you've seen the curious post by Hand Drawn Records touting their upcoming compilation project, but the criteria lined out for getting onto the comp basically said, "New material. Cool material. Only."

Since we just released a record in December, the new material bucket initially seemed daunting.

I say initially because right around the submission deadline Aaron Borden hit the band with a demo titled "A Song About Us"; and it was righteous. Aaron and I did some multi-tracking on the tune, and as the HDR deadline continued to creep up we decided to give it a run for the disc.

Besides a quick two song Cities excursion with Alex Gerst in late-2009, the band has been tracking everything by our lonesome, and my, oh my, it was getting lonely. So, in a feat of email-ery we asked producer extraordinaire Salim Nourallah (Producer of the Year 2004-2010; Old 97's, Deathray Davies) to let us come hang our hats on him, and wouldn't you know it, he had a rack for us at his aptly named Pleasantry Lane Studios in Dallas.

Yesterday we rolled into the studio and I was able to catch a couple of quick iPhone pics in-between takes; which you can see below. They're grainy, but don't worry; our great friends and photo contributors James Villa and Jen Winters were on-hand to shoot stills, as well as, a video to accompany the comp release!

The release date for the Hand Drawn Records - Compilation Volume 1 has been set for April 14th @ Lola's Saloon in Fort Worth. We'll have more hoopla for you on that as we get it!

"Raggedy Woods" Pencils by Blocker

When creating the Townies album art I did A LOT of concept sketches, but none of them would stick until this one hit me like a...thunderbolt, light bulb?

The original piece was a large close-up of the Raggedy Ann and Andy characters, but the guys (ahem, Borden...Kelly) said it was "too creepy".  My thought is that if you get weirded out by a drawing of Raggedy Ann and Andy, then you might need to revisit your creepy threshold.

Well, I gave in a bit, because I made them smaller and threw them into the forest, which lends more to the backwoods theme anyways.

This image has been pressed onto all 1000 copies of Townies, so if they "creep" you out, perhaps just leave it in the player with the repeat-button pushed?   Problem solved!
